TO FOLLOW THE MOVIE
In the summer of 2006,
Jerusalem was to host, for the first time in history, the World Pride events,
which were to culminate in a traditional gay pride parade. The planned events
stirred turmoil in the politically complex city, with Jewish, Muslim and
Christian religious leaders banding together in an uncompromising battle against
what they said would "defile the holy city." On the other side stood the
activists of the Open House, Jerusalem's LGBT community center, who planned the
events. Steadfast in the face of the heated and violent anti-gay sentiment, they
had to deal with threats to much more than just their right to
march.
RUSSELL
MURPHY, CO PRESIDENT OF INTERPRIDE - The International Association of LGBT Pride
Organizers will be in attendance for a post movie Q & A session. Mr. Murphy
was in Jerusalem for the events and his organization, is the parent organization
for World Pride, which has been held now in Israel and Rome.

| History of NCOD On Oct. 11, 1987, half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. This was the second such demonstration in our nation’s capital and the first display of the NAMES Project Quilt, remembering those who have died from AIDS. One measure of the march’s success was the number of organizations that were founded as a result — including the National Latino/a Gay & Lesbian Organization (LLEGÓ) and AT&T’s GLBT employee group, LEAGUE. The momentum continued four months after this extraordinary march as more than 100 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender activists from around the country gathered in Manassas, Va., about 25 miles outside Washington, D.C. Recognizing that the GLBT community often reacted defensively to anti-gay actions, they came up with the idea of a national day to celebrate coming out and chose the anniversary of that second march on Washington to mark it. The originators of the idea were Rob Eichberg, a founder of the personal growth workshop, The Experience, and Jean O'Leary, then head of National Gay Rights Advocates. National Coming Out Day was born.
O'Leary expanded the West Hollywood, Calif., office of NGRA to give National Coming Out Day its first headquarters. She hired staff and began preparations for the big day. And, activist Sean Strub got Keith Haring to donate his now-famous image of a person fairly dancing out of a closet. The first National Coming Out Day was celebrated with events in 18 states, and national media attention including The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, USA Today and National Public Radio.
| Being Open with Yourself
From birth, most of us are raised to think of ourselves as fitting into a certain mold. Our culture and our families teach us that we are “supposed” to be attracted to people of the opposite sex, and that boys and girls are supposed to look, act and feel certain ways.
Few of us were told we might fall in love with someone of the same sex, or that we might have a gender identity that differs from the body into which we were born. That’s why so many of us are scared, worried or confused when facing these truths.
Opening up to the possibility that you may be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or even just questioning means opening up to the idea that you’re on a path that’s your own. It’s also why coming out and living ever more openly is a profoundly liberating experience.
In the end, and at the beginning, the first person you have be open with is yourself.
Throughout the coming out process, it’s normal to feel:
Scared Confused Vulnerable Empowered Exhilarated Relieved Proud Uncertain Brave Affirmed |
